Mother

In the year 1941, the Second World War reached Colombo, so clouds of war clouded Rameswaram as well. The impact of the war also knocked on the door of the small house where our extended family lived in Rameswaram. Thus there is a shortage of everything, starting with food.

A very simple breakfast is always in our house. Even more than that, my mother would give me a little more. Am I studying and doing paper work or not... I need energy to run, for that...

I feel it necessary to share here an incident that happened one night at my house. We were all eating at night. I kept eating to give my mother chapati. After eating my brother took me outside the house. "Kalam, what are you doing. Mother gave you chapati to eat

He keeps going. He also gave you the sabbath he had laid for himself.

You also ate everything. There is no more flour in the house. There is no sabbath. Be a little more responsible. It is a difficult time. Don't let your mother starve."

I ate without realizing this detail and my hands and feet were shaking. I was confused as to what we had done. I ran and hugged my mother. I learned sacrifice from him.

My mother must have believed that I would make it. Thus my mother helped me to study till 11 o'clock by giving me a kerosene lamp alone even in that difficulty. Not only that, he would also stay awake with me.

Then he sleeps after putting me to sleep. My mother is full of love and compassion. Above all, he looks like a holy angel to me.

I still remember that day I was 10 years old and it was a full moon day

Kalam wrote several books, including an autobiography, Wings of Fire (1999), and a book titled Ignited Minds (2002). Among his numerous awards were three of the country's highest honors: the Padma Bhushan (1981), the Padma Vibhushan (1990), and the Bharat Ratna (1997)
