Chapter 9 - Walkthrough
Vandhiyathevan had spent his entire life in the dry regions north of the Palattu, so he did not know how to swim in the river flood. Once, while he was on duty as a border guard on the banks of the Vadapennai, he went down into the river to bathe. He was caught in a large whirlpool. That evil, poisonous whirlpool made him spin around and around, tormenting him. At the same time, it was also pulling him down. Soon, the whirlpool sucked up all of Vandhiyathevan's strength. "I can't live anymore, I have to drown in the whirlpool and die!" Vandhiyathevan was in despair, and he emerged from the river whirlpool like a god. The flood swept him away and saved him on the shore!
That night, when Vandiyathevan went back to bed, he felt the same way as if he had been caught in the whirlpool of a river. It seemed that he had fallen into the whirlpool of a great political conspiracy against his will. Could he escape this conspiracy as he had escaped from that whirlpool? Would God save him once again?
The things he learned from the midnight meeting held at the Kadambur palace that day had stunned him. It had only been a few years since the troubles caused by external enemies to the great Chola empire had ended. Prince Aditha Karikalar was a great warrior, an expert in the art of war, and a Chanakya in diplomacy. By making full use of his intelligence and the fighting skills of the Chola army, he completely removed the dominance of King Krishna of the dual realm from the Thondai realm. External enmity had somehow disappeared. In this situation, internal rebellion and conspiracy had begun to rise. What would be the result of this internal enmity, which was more dangerous than external enmity?
Aren't the famous warriors, ministers, leaders and officials of the Chola country involved in this terrible attempt? What kind of people are Pazhuvettarai and his brothers? What is their power? What is their influence? How famous, famous, influential and powerful are the others gathered here today? Could this be the first such gathering? How many more such gatherings will Pazhuvettarai have been held in the palace of Madhurantaka?
Has he taken you to places? Oh my! How much did marrying a young woman at an old age benefit him in this conspiracy attempt?
To this day, there was no doubt in Vandiyathevan's mind that Prince Aditha Karikalar was the rightful heir to the Chola throne. He had never even dreamed that a rivalry might arise. He had heard a little about Kandarathittha's son Madhurantaka, and he knew that like his father, his sons were devotees of Shiva, but he had never heard that he had a right to the kingdom or could compete for it. That thought had never crossed his mind until then.
But what about justice? Who really deserves the title? Aditha Karikala? Madhurantaka? Thinking about it, it seemed that there was justice on both sides. If the competition really happened, which of these two would win? What is his duty? Ah! We set out on this journey from Kanchi with all sorts of mental fortitude? We hoped to live up to the expectations of the title's prince Aditha Karikala and achieve great positions in the Chola empire! We thought that in time we would even regain the ancestral kingdom of the Vanara clan? It seems that whatever tiger's horn we hold as a tool for all this will break...? With such thoughts, Vandhiya Thevan lay down for the second time and could not sleep for a long time. Finally, in the fourth watch of the night, when the east was breaking, he somehow fell asleep.
The next morning, even when the red rays of the rising sun fell on him, Vandhiyathevan did not wake up. He only woke up when Kandhamaran came and knocked on his door.
"Did you sleep well last night?" asked Kandhamaran, as was customary when entertaining guests. Then he himself said, "I came here after all the other guests had gone to sleep. You were doing good Kumbhakarna service!"
Vandiyathevan suppressed all the memories that were surging in his mind and said, "I only know that I came here after watching the crow and lay down, and I have only just woken up. Oh my! It has been so long! It seems like there is a long wait! I must leave immediately. Kandhamara! Order your servants to prepare the horse!"
"It's beautiful! Are you leaving before then? What's the hurry? You should stay here for at least ten days and then leave," said Kandhamaran.
"No, that's right! My uncle in Thanjavur is not feeling well. News has come that he is in dire straits. So I must go and see him soon. I must leave immediately," Vallavarayan said in one fell swoop.
"In that case, we'll have to stay here for a few days on our way back."
"What's the matter, I'll take care of it then, now say goodbye before I leave."
"Don't be in such a hurry! We can leave after breakfast. I will accompany you to the Kolli River."
"How can that be? Who, who, big guests have come to your house, and you leave them behind..."
"I can't have a bigger guest than you!.." said Kandan Maravel and suddenly stopped. "Those who have come are big guests, but my father is there to take care of them; there are also palace officials. I didn't talk to you for much last night. Only if I chat with you for a while on the way will my mind be at ease. I will definitely reach Kollidakkarai!" he said.
"I have no objection. Your wish, your comfort," said Vandhiyathevan.
After an hour, the two friends set off from the Sambhuvariyar mansion on two horses. The horses moved slowly. The journey was very pleasant. The friends did not even mind the occasional gust of wind that blew the road over them. They were so absorbed in talking about old memories.
After a while, Vandiyathevan said; 'Kandhamara! Even though I stayed at your house for just one night, it was very useful for me. But there was only one disappointment. You were making all sorts of comments about your sister on the banks of the Vadapennai river! I couldn't even get a good look at her. When she hid behind your mother and peeked in, only one-eighth of her face was visible! Your sister has a little more modesty and modesty than women should have."
Kandhamaran's mouth and lips struggled to say something, but no words came out.
"But there's no harm in that. You're the one who said I should stay at your house for a few days when I get back. If we talk about it then, it'll go away. By then, your sister's shyness might also go away a bit, right? Kandhamara! What did you say your sister's name was?"
Hourglass!"
“Atta! What a sweet name! Just like the name, it has beauty and character.”
Kandhamaran interrupted, "Friend! I have one request of you. Forget my sister; forget everything I said about her; don't even listen to her!"
"What is this, Kandamara! There is a change under one head! Even last night you spoke eloquently about coming to the inner house as a daughter-in-law."
"What I said was true, but then a different situation arose. My parents decided to marry my sister off somewhere else, and Manimekalai agreed to it!"
"Long live the Manimekalai in the heart of Vandiyathevan!" he said. He had no difficulty guessing to whom they would have decided to give the Manimekalai. They would have decided to give it to Prince Madhurantaka, who emerged from the covered palanquin. They are establishing all these relationships to gain strength for Madhurantaka's party. Pazhuvettarai is a wicked and cunning man!
"Ah! You've planned to make one of the rich guests who came last night the groom! Oh my! I'm not surprised by this; I'm not disappointed. It's just what I expected..."
"Did you expect it? How is that?"
"Who would give a wife to a poor orphan like me? What woman would agree to marry a man without a town or a home? If my ancestors once ruled the state, what use is that now?"
"Friend! Stop it; don't talk so badly about me and my family! There is no reason for what you are saying. There is another, more important reason. If you know it, you will admit it. But I don't want to reveal it now. You will know it when the time comes!"
"Sundamara! What is this mystery you keep talking about today?"
"Forgive me for that. I can't even talk about it openly. Trust me, no matter what, it won't hurt our friendship. When the time comes to reveal the truth, I'll come running and tell you first. Until then, trust me. I'll never abandon you. Trust me!"
"Thank you very much for this promise, but I don't know what the situation is that would make you abandon me! I'm not the kind of person who would rely on someone else to survive, Kandhamara! I rely on my own clothes, swords, and handiwork!"
"The time will soon come when we will need to use that sword and that work. Then we will both stand in the same party and fight shoulder to shoulder; and so our inner purpose will be achieved."
'What is this? Do you expect some war to come soon? Or do you intend to go to the war in Eelam?'
To Eelam? You will be surprised if you ask about the beautiful war going on in Eelam. Rice and other food grains should go from the Chola country for our soldiers in Eelam! What Vetin is saying is a different matter. Be patient, I will tell you when the time comes. Please don't cut me off now.
"Okay, okay, if you don't want to say anything, don't even open your mouth. You can see it in Kolli!" said Vandhiya Thevan. Indeed, the flood of the Kolli River could be seen a little distance away. In a few moments, the friends reached the riverbank.
The torrential rain swept over the shore in that thicket. The other bank seemed to be a long way off. The trees on the other bank were small plants. Vandhiyathevan stood in awe as she watched the huge, red-hued flood of water, swirling and swirling in circular patterns, trying to break the bank, roaring 'Ho' and rushing towards the sea.
A boat stopped at the dock, and two boatmen were rowing with long poles in their hands. A man had already boarded the boat. Looking at him, he seemed to be a great devotee of Shiva, Sikamani.
Looking at the people coming to the shore, one of the boatmen asked, "Are you going to come by boat, Sabi?"
"Yes; he's coming, stop the boat!" said Kandhamaran! The two friends jumped down from the horse.
"I came here without any idea? What should I do with this horse? Can I get on the boat?" asked Vandhiyathevan.
"No need. Here are two men following us. One will bring your horse from here to Kadampur. The other will board the boat with you and earn you another horse on the other side!" said Kandhamaran.
"But what forethought? You are a true friend, aren't you!" said Vandhiyathevan.
"You must have thought of Kollidham as the same as the Bala and Penna rivers. You wouldn't have thought that you couldn't take a horse along it!"
"Yes, I'll forgive you for thinking so carelessly about your Chola river, Dad. What kind of river is this? What kind of flood is this? Isn't it surging like the ocean?"
The two friends hugged each other and said goodbye.
Vandiyathevan went along the riverbank and boarded a boat.
One of the men who came with Kandhamaran also got on board.
The boat was ready to leave, and the rowers began to wave their flags. Suddenly, from a distance, a voice was heard saying, "Stop! Stop! Stop the boat."
The runners hesitated a little before scoring.
The man who came running with a shout arrived at the shore without warning. At first sight, Vandiyathevan knew who he was - it was Azhwarkadiyan Nambi.
When the boatman realized that the person coming was a Vaishnava, he said, "Leave the boat and go home! I will not come on the boat with that hypocrite. Let him come on the next boat!"
But Vandiyathevan looked at the boatmen and said, "Wait a moment, let him come too! There is plenty of room in the boat! Let's load him and go!"
Vandhiyathevan wanted to hear many things from Azhwarkadiyaan about last night's events.
