Indian presidential election :

The Indian presidential election was held on 15.07.2002 in Delhi on Monday. Candidate Abdul Kalam contested on behalf of the National Democratic Alliance and Captain Lakshmi contested on behalf of the Left parties.

On 25.07.2002 Tamil Nadu nuclear scientist Abdul Kalam was elected as the 12th President of India. Kalam won the election with 90 percent of the votes cast. Kalam is the 3rd Tamil to become President.

Abdul Kalam got 9,22,884 votes and Lakshmi Segal got 1,07,366 votes. Out of 760 MPs, 638 people supported Kalam. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Ms. Jayalalithaa and Artist Karunanidhi congratulated Kalam.

On 01.07.2002, Abdul Kalam, who assumed office as the President of India, visited the "Sivashakti Kakumkaralang" Home for the mentally retarded at Poontamalli, Chennai.

The head of the organization warmly welcomed him with a bouquet of flowers. Then Kalam lovingly interrogated a mentally retarded, visually impaired boy.
