Chapter 11 The Surprise Arrival

The city, which today appears in the English dictionary as Kumbakonam, was known as Kudanthai and Kudamookku at the time of our story. Apart from its sacred status, it was also famous for its astrologer Kudanthai. A short distance to the southwest of Kudanthai, the medieval capital of the Cholas, Pazhayarai, loomed majestically with its sky-high palaces and temple towers.

The astrologer of Kudanthai had collected the horoscopes of all the royal families who lived in the palaces of Pazhayarai. He found the horoscope of the princess of Kodumbalur, Vanathi, by leafing through the horoscopes he had collected. After studying the horoscope for a while, the astrologer looked up at Vanathi's face. He looked at the horoscope again. He kept looking at it in this way, but could not find a way to open his mouth and say anything.

"What, fortune teller! Are you going to say something or not?" asked Kundavai Devi.

"Mother! What can I say? How can I say it? I accidentally looked at this horoscope once before. I couldn't believe it myself; I had doubts that this could even be possible. Now, when I look at this woman's face and this horoscope together, I have to be stunned!"

"Shock! Shock! Shock enough and then say something specific!"

"This is a very lucky horoscope, Mother! I promise you won't think anything different. This is even better than your horoscope. I have never seen such a lucky horoscope before!"

Kuntavai understood the situation; Vanathi was embarrassed and said, "Sister! Why are you calling this unfortunate woman the luckiest woman in the world? That's what she says!"

"Mom! What did you say? If what I say is wrong, I will quit my profession," said the astrologer.

"No. Astrologer! No, don't do that. You're just saying good things to four people. But you're just saying it in general terms, not saying anything specific, right? That's why she's suspicious!"

"Need I say anything specific? Here I go! Four months ago, something that seemed like a bad omen happened. Something went wrong; but it wasn't really a bad omen. That's where all the luck for these Gomas is going to come from!"

"Vanathi! What did I say? Did you see?" said Kundavai Devi.

"It seems like you told him this before!" said Vanathi.

"Don't listen to this woman, Ray!"

"Let's talk, mother! Now let's talk about whatever we want! Tomorrow the king will marry the king..."

"Say that. If you talk to young women about marriage, wouldn't they be happy to listen?...

"That's what I'm saying too. Mother! You shouldn't suddenly start a wedding speech, right? If you do, they'll say, 'This old man's story is ruined!'"

"Where will her husband come from? When will he come? What is his sign? Can you tell me all this from the horoscope, astrologer!"

"Ah! What can't you say? I can say it very well!" he said, and the astrologer looked at the horoscope again.

We don't know if he noticed, or if he was just pretending to notice.

Then, raising his head, the astrologer said, "Mother! This princess does not need a husband from far away. He is from nearby, but that brave warrior is no longer in this country. He has crossed the sea!"

Hearing this, Kundavai looked at the sky.

Even though he tried to suppress the joy that was swelling in Vanathi's heart, it showed itself.

"Then? Who is he? What clan? Is there any identification to know?"

"Good luck, the lucky man who marries this woman will have the conch shell mark on his hands. Mother!"

Kundavai looked at Vanathi again. Vanathi's face was downcast and looking at the earth.

"Then, wouldn't there be any identifying marks on her hands?" said the Kuntavai Prati,

"Mother! Have you ever seen his feet?"

"Why, astrologer! What kind of word is this! Are you telling me to hold her leg?"

"No; I didn't say that, but once upon a time, thousands of royal women, princesses, princesses, queens, and empresses would do penance for the privilege of touching the feet of this queen, mother!"

"Sister! This old man is making fun of me. Is this why you brought me here? Get up and let's go!" Vanathi said with genuine anger,

"What are you so nervous about, girl! Let him say something and go away..."

'I am not saying anything; I am just saying what is mentioned in this horoscope. Some poets would describe it as 'paadathammarai'. Ask me to show you the soles of this woman's feet, and there will definitely be traces of red lotus petals on them.'

"Enough! Astrologer, if you say anything more about her, she'll grab my hand and drag me away. Tell me a little about the husband she's going to get..."

Ah! I tell you! The blessed one who holds her hand will be a brave warrior! He will stand at the forefront of a hundred battlefields and wear a crown of gold. He will be a king, a king, and will sit on the throne of the emperor, admired by thousands of kings, for twelve centuries.

"I don't believe what you're saying. How can that happen?" Kundavai Devi's face was filled with a mixture of curiosity, joy, doubt, and worry.

"I don't believe it either. He's talking with something in mind. He says that if he says this, they will be happy!" said Vanathi. "If you don't believe it today, there's no harm in it; you will believe it someday, then don't forget this poor astrologer."

"Sister! Shall we go?" Vanathi asked again.

Two teardrops were peeking out from the corners of his dark eyes.

"I will tell you just one more thing. Listen to that and then leave. The warrior who is going to marry this princess will face many dangers and hardships; he has many enemies..."

"Oh!"

But all these dangers and obstacles will eventually vanish; the enemies will be destroyed. The hero who attains this Goddess will overcome all obstacles and attain a great position. There is a more important message, Mother! I am old, so I will tell you what is inside without hiding it. One day, you should look at this woman's stomach. If there are no lines of Aalilai on it, I will give up this profession of astrology...

"What's special about the line of the moon, astrologer?"

Don't you know who the Lord who worshipped on the top of the hill is? A child will be born in her womb with the aspect of that Mahavishnu. Even her dogs have many obstacles, obstacles, dangers, and continents, but there will be no obstacles for the son who is going to be born in this woman's womb. Whatever he thinks will be achieved; whatever he undertakes will be fulfilled. Whatever he touches will turn into gold; wherever he sets his foot, his rule will be subject to him; wherever he looks, the tiger flag will fly. Mother! The armies led by her son will flow like the fresh flood of the golden river, and Yalakshmi, who will stand with her hands folded, will serve him. The fame of the country where he was born will spread throughout the three worlds. The fame of the clan where he was born will endure as long as the world exists!..."

As the astrologer spoke in this manner, as if possessed, Kundavai Devi stared at his face, listening intently to his words.

He turned around in surprise when he heard the familiar voice, "Akka!"
