Chapter 12 - Nandini

Shouldn't we tell you how Vandhiyathevan, who we left behind on a boat on the banks of Kolli, arrived at the house of the astrologer Kudanthai at that time?

Saiva Periyar, who objected to Azhwarkadiyan boarding the boat, looked at Vandiya Thevan and said, "Brother! I have taken him on board, saying that he will go for you. But he must not utter that eight-letter name while he is on the boat. If he does, I will have him arrested and thrown out of this place. The boatmen are my men!"

"My dear brothers and sisters! Did it reach your ears?" asked Vandiyathevan.

"If this man did not say the five-letter name, I also did not say the eight-letter name!" said Alvarkadiyan.

"Who is this person who forbids us from chanting the Panchacharya Mantra of Lord Shiva? No way! No way!

Let the calamus fly into the sea.

May the Lord Shiva be with you! &#8221; </div>

Saiva Periyar roared majestically.

"I searched and searched, and I found it."

Alwarkadiyan began to sing in a loud voice.

"Shiva, Shiva, Shiva!" Saivar said, putting his fingers in both ears and covering them.

When the Azhwarkadiyan stopped singing, Saivar took out his fingers from his ears.

Alwarkadiyan looked at Vandiyathevan and said, "Brother! You yourself should listen to that brave Saivar. Is he taking so much trouble just to ask the name of the Lord? This Kollidha river flows down after washing the lotus feet of the Lord, who has a temple in Srirangam. The holy water of the Lord's feet is the holy water of the Lord.

"Isn't that why Lord Shiva is bathing in that water at Thiruvanaikkaval and performing penance?" Before he could say that, Saiva Periyar became very angry and rushed at Alwarkadiyan. The two men on the boat were fighting on the side, and it looked like the boat was going to capsize. The boatmen and Vandhiya Thevan intervened and separated them.

"Devoted chiefs! It seems that you both want to jump into this great flood and go straight to salvation. But I still have things left to do in this world!" said Vandiyathevan.

One of the runners said, "If you fall into a pit, you will definitely go to Moksha or not! But you can definitely go into the belly of a crocodile! Look at that!"

At the spot he pointed out, a crocodile was seen with its mouth open in terror.

"I have no fear of the crocodile; where has the original Narayana Murthy who saved Gajendra gone?" said Alwarkadiyan.

"Where has he gone? He is probably hiding under the sari of the Gopika women of Vrindavan!" said Saivar.

"Or, like when he ran away screaming after offering a gift to Padmasura, Shiva might have faced another dilemma; Thirumal might have gone to save Shiva from that dilemma," said Nambi.

"It seems this Vaishnava doesn't remember the Karvapanga that Thirumal attained during the Tripura Samharam!" said Saiva Periyar.

"Swami! I don't know why you are fighting like this! Who is devoted to which deity, should he worship that deity?" said Vandiyathevan.

Why did Saiva Periyar and Azhwar Kadiyan fight like that? It would be appropriate to tell the readers at this point why a similar argument took place in Veera Narayanapuram.

Buddhism and Jainism were influential in ancient Tamil Nadu for about six hundred years. Due to this influence, Tamil Nadu achieved many benefits. Arts like sculpture, painting, poetry, epic poetry etc. flourished. Later, the Azhwars and Nayanmars appeared. They poured out Tamil hymns praising the gods. They made Vaishnavism and Saivism flourish. Their method of propaganda was very powerful. Religious Along with sculpture, they also used music for propaganda. Many people began to sing the songs of the Alvars and the songs of the three Thevars in music similar to the Devaganam. These songs thrilled the hearts of the listeners and instilled devotion. The Vishnu temples sung by the Alvars and the Shiva temples sung by the three attained new splendor and sanctity. The temples that had been built of brick and wood before were renovated and built as temples. This renovation was done extensively by the Chola kings and members of the royal family since the Vijayalaya Chola period.

At the same time, a special incident took place in the country of Kerala. A great man appeared in a place called Kaladi. At a young age, he renounced the world and became a monk. He studied all the scriptures in the northern language and found success. He planted the flag of the Advaita Vedanta doctrine on the basis of the Vedic Upanishads, Bhagavad Gita, and Brahma Sutra. With the help of the knowledge he had acquired in the northern language, he conquered the entire country and established eight Advaita monasteries here and there. Advaita monks who supported his doctrine spread throughout the country.

Thus, during the time of our story in Tamil Nadu, that is, about 980 years ago (written in 1950), there was a great religious turmoil. Some harmful aspects also emerged and spread from this turmoil. Heroic Vaishnavas and Heroic Saivas sprouted here and there. They started fighting wherever they could. Advaitis also participated in these wars of argument. Religious wars sometimes developed into hand-to-hand fighting.

There is a wonderful story that explains the Saiva-Vaishnav war of that time.

A Vaishnava of Srirangam was walking along the outer wall of the Thiruvanaikkaval temple. Suddenly, a stone fell on his head. He was injured and blood flowed. The Vaishnava looked up. He knew that the stone of the old tower must have collapsed because a crow was sitting on it. Immediately, he forgot his injury and pain and was filled with joy. "O brave Vaishnava of Srirangam! Destroy the Shiva temple of Thiruvanaikkaval!" he said.

Such a Saiva-Vaishnava difference of opinion was very prevalent in those days. Knowing this will be of great benefit in further reading this story later.

When the boat reached the other side, Saiva Periyar looked at Azhwarkadiyan and gave him a final curse, saying, "You will be destroyed!" and went his way.

The Kadambur warrior who had come with Vandiyathevan went to the nearby Thiruppananthal and said that he was earning a horse. Alwarkadiyan and Vandiyathevan sat under the royal tree on the riverbank. Hundreds of birds were making sweet chirping sounds in the wide, thick branches of that tree.

Vandiyathevan and Nambi wanted to grab each other's mouths and grasp something, and at first they talked in circles for a while.

"Why, brother! You left me without taking me to the Kadambur mansion, didn't you?"

"I'm sorry, it's been a big hassle for me to leave!"

"Really? How did you leave then? Maybe you didn't leave?"

"I went, I went, if I had something in mind, would I retreat? The gatekeepers stopped me. I let the horse in with a tap. All the people who stopped me rolled over and fell to the ground. Then, before they could get up and surround me, my friend Kandhamaran ran and took me away."

"I thought it would be like that. You're very brave. So what happened then? Who, who came?"

"So many dignitaries had come. I don't know all their names. Pazhuvettaraiyar had come. His young wife had also come. Oh my! What can I say about the beauty of that woman?..."

"Did you see what?"

"Yes, didn't you see? My friend Kandhamaran took me to that place. There I saw. Out of all the women, the youngest queen of Pazhuvettaraiyar was the most beautiful! Among the other dark-skinned women, that queen's face shone like the full moon. Arambai, Urvashi, Dilothamai, Indrani, and Chandrani all fell in love with her!"

"Oh my! Are you describing it all at once? What happened next? Did it happen in a flash?"

"It went very well. I thought of you then."
