 Chapter 16

 Arulmozhivarmar

About 980 years ago (written in 1950), King Ko Rajakesarivarman of Parantaka Sundara Chola was an unparalleled emperor in the south. He ascended the throne about twelve years before the time of our story. For the past hundred years, the power of the Cholas had grown stronger day by day. The Chola empire had spread in all four directions. However, by the time Sundara Chola came to power, enemies in the south and north had become stronger. Gandaradhitha, who ruled before Sundara Chola, was known as 'Sivagnana Gandaradhitha' due to his devotion to Shiva. He did not take much effort in expanding the kingdom. His brother Arinjaya, who came to power after Gandaradhitha, remained on the throne for a year. After his death at 'Atur' in the Thondai country, his son Parantaka Sundara Chola ascended the throne of Thanjavur.

All the best qualities that an emperor should have were also found in the Sundara Chola emperor. The warlike Gandara Chola invaded the south at the beginning of his reign. A great battle took place between the Chola army and the Pandya army at a place called Seyur. At that time, the Sinhalese king Mahinda had sent a large army to support Veera Pandya, who was the king of Madurai. The great and heroic army of the Cholas defeated the army of the Pandyas and the Sinhalese army at Seyur. Veera Pandya, exhausted, hairless, and without companions, fled the battlefield for his life and hid in a mountain cave in the middle of a desert area and died. In the battle of Seyur, the Eelam army was almost annihilated. Some of the remaining soldiers, having shed their glory and valor on the battlefield, fled to Eelam for their lives.

Thus, it had been a custom for some time for the Sinhala kings to intervene in the wars between the Pandyas and the Cholas and send reinforcements to the Pandyas. Emperor Sundara Chola wanted to eradicate this custom completely. Therefore, he decided to send a Chola army to Sri Lanka to teach the Sinhala kings a lesson. He sent a large army to Sinhala under the leadership of a small peasant named Paranthakan, a member of the Kodumbalur Chitrarasar family. Unfortunately, the Chola army did not reach Sinhala in one go, as it did not have the necessary shipping facilities. The army that had gone the first time boldly started advancing without any prior thought.

The Sinhalese army, led by Mahindaraja's general Vena, unexpectedly arrived and surrounded the Chola army. A terrible and fierce battle took place. In it, the Chola commander Paranthakan, the small Velan, established his heroic fame and gave up his life! She became known in historical inscriptions as 'Paranthakan, the small Velan who was defeated by Eelam'.

When this news reached Veera Pandyan, who was hiding in a mountain cave in the desert, Ammallan came out again with courage. He again gathered a large army and fought. This time the Pandyan army was defeated, and Veera Pandyan also had to give up his life. In this battle, Aditha Karikala, the first son of Sundara Chola, stood at the forefront and performed heroic deeds; 'Veera Pandyan also earned the title of 'Kopparakesari, the Headed Warrior'.

However, the desire to teach the Sinhala king Mahinda a good lesson was not only in the mind of Sundara Chola Chakravarthy, but also in the minds of all the generals, vassals and soldiers of the Chola country. A large army was also prepared to invade. The question arose as to who would lead it. Sundara Chola's eldest son - the crown prince Aditha Karikalar, had at that time gone north. Having defeated and driven away the twin-mandal forces (Rashtrakutas) that had been dominating the Thirumunaipaddi country and the Thondai region for some time, he was making the ancient city of Kanchi his residence. He was also preparing to invade the north.

In this situation, there was a great competition among the other generals of the Chola country to lead the Eelamandalam army. Jealousy and hostility arose from the competition. In ancient Tamil Nadu, it is very rare to see someone who wanted to escape from war. The competition arose only over who would go to the battlefield. From this, jealousy and hostility sometimes grew.

At this time, a rivalry arose among the leaders of the Chola nation as to who would go to Eelam and avenge Mahinda and uphold the heroic reputation of the Cholas. Arulmozhivarman, the young son of the Sundara Chola king, came forward to end this rivalry and pacify everyone.

"Father! It's enough that I have grown up as a pet among my aunts and grandmothers in the Pazhayarai Palace for so many days. Appoint me as the commander-in-chief of the Southern Army. I am going to Sri Lanka to lead and conduct the Eelam War!" said Ilango Arulmozhivarmar,

Arulmozhivarman was only nineteen years old at the time. He was the youngest son of Sundara Chola; the darling of all the queens who greeted him in the palaces of Pazhayarai: he was the darling of the Chola nation itself. The Sundara Chola king was a handsome man. His father was Arinjaya. He was captivated by the beauty of Kaliyani, a daughter of the Vaitumbarayar dynasty, who were enemies of the Chola clan, and married her. Born to Arinjaya and Kaviyani, Sundara Chola was named Paranthagar by his parents. Seeing his handsome appearance, the countrymen and the citymen called him "Sundara Chola" and that became the name given to him by everyone.

All the children born to such a man were beautiful. But the last one, Arulmozhivarma, surpassed them all in beauty. The beauty that shone on his face was not only human; it was divine. When he was a child, the queens of the Chola dynasty would kiss him and kiss him until his cheeks were soft. The one who was most in love with him was his sister Kundavai. Although she was two years older than Arulmozhi, Kundavai felt that the responsibility of raising her younger brother was on her head, and Arulmozhi had an equal love for Kundavai. The younger brother would not cross the line that his younger brother had set. If the younger brother said a word, Arulmozhivarma would not care even if Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva came together to say the opposite. The younger brother's word was the word of the gods to his younger brother.

She would stare at her younger brother's face intently. Not only when he was awake, but even when he was sleeping, she would count the hours, thinking, "This child has some divine power! It is my responsibility to reveal it and make it shine!" She would often look at her younger brother's palms when he was sleeping. The lines on those hands would appear to her to be in the shape of a conch shell. "Ah! Isn't this the one who was born to roam the world under the shade of an umbrella!" She would think.

But, there was no room to think that he would ascend the Chola throne. He had two seniors who were worthy of the title. Ble. Where is the kingdom going to come to him and on which throne is he going to ascend? Who saw the divine mind? The world is very vast, how many countries, how many kingdoms are there in this world. Haven't we heard in stories and epics about kings who, with their might, went from one country to another and ascended the throne of the king? The Ganges River

Didn't the prince, who was exiled from the land of Bengal, board a boat and go to Sri Lanka and establish a government? Didn't that Sinhala royal dynasty stand firm for a thousand years?

Kundavaipratti pondered this endlessly. Finally, when the debate arose about who should be the commander of the army to be sent to Sri Lanka, she came to the conclusion that Arulmozhi was the right person.

"Brother, Arulmozhi! Even being separated from you for a moment has caused me so much trouble. However, the time has come to bid you farewell. You are the one who should assume the leadership of the Sri Lankan army!" she said.

The prince agreed to this with enthusiasm. Arulmozhi Varma's heart was pounding, wondering when he would escape from palace life and the warmth of the queens of the palace. He had already asked his beloved brother to leave! What more could be the obstacle? If Kundavai Devi had set her mind to it, there was nothing that could not be done in the Chola Empire! The Sundara Chola emperor had so much desire for his wealthy daughter; so much trust!

Ilango Arulmozhivarman became the great leader of the Southern Chola army. He also went to Sri Lanka, where he led the army and fought for some time. But the war did not end easily. There was a difference between the way he fought and the way others fought. All the equipment and supplies he needed from his homeland did not arrive properly. Therefore, he had to return to his homeland in the meantime. He told his father and made all the arrangements according to his wishes. He was ready to go to Eelam again.

Kundavai Devi had arranged a wedding ceremony in the main palace of Pazhyarai to send her beloved brother off to the battlefield. When Arulmozhi Thevar set out, victory trumpets rang out in the palace courtyard, sangams were played; small drums beat; and slogans of congratulations filled the sky. All the mothers of the Chola clan blessed the darling child of the palace, applied the enchanted holy water on his forehead, cast a curse, and sent him on his way.

At the entrance to the palace, where Arulmozhivarman was to alight at the gate of the road, Kundavai Devi's female companions stood, carrying golden plates with lamps in their hands. Were the female companions ordinary people? They belonged to the families of famous petty kings in the South. They had considered it a privilege to serve Sembiyan Madevi in the Pazhayarai palace and to be Kundavai Pratti's companions. Among them were

Vanathi, the daughter of a small farmer from Kodumbalur, was also there. When the prince approached from a distance, all the women became excited. When the prince approached, they wrapped their plates around him and took turns holding him.

Then the whole of Yalatip's bed suddenly trembled and the plate in his hand slipped and fell down, making a loud crash. 'Oh my! What a bad omen this is!' The thought arose in everyone's mind. But after the plate fell down, they were relieved to see that only the wick was still burning. 'The old men assured them that this was a very good omen.

Seeing the woman who had slipped the plate without any reason, Arulmozhivarman smiled and went upstairs. When he went beyond, Vanathi fainted and collapsed, "Oh! The thought of having made such a mistake made Vanathi faint and fall." On Kundavai's orders, the other women carried her and laid her on a bed in a room. Kundavai, without even stopping to watch her brother leave, went inside and tried to make Vanathi faint. Arulmozhivarman, who had seen Vanathi collapse while standing at the door, asked before he mounted his horse, "How is the poor woman? Has she recovered from her fainting?" He sent someone to inquire. Kuthavai Devi told the person who had come to inquire, "Tell the prince to come here for a while and then go," and sent him away. The prince, who had never ignored his sister-in-law's words, returned to the palace. The sight of Vanathi, who was trying to regain consciousness with her sister-in-law resting her chest on his chest, melted his heart.

"Sister! Who is this woman? What is her name?" asked Ilango.

"This is the daughter of the small farmer of Kodumbalur, her name is Vanathi; she is a bit timid by nature!" said Kunthavai.

"Ah! Now I know the reason why he fainted. Did this woman's father go to Sri Lanka and die on the battlefield without returning? She must have thought of that!" said the prince.

"Maybe, but don't worry about her! I'll take care of her! Go to Sri Lanka and return as a victorious warrior soon! Keep sending me messages to beat you!" said the younger sister,

"Let's go: if anything special happens here, send me a message!" said Ilango.

At this moment, perhaps because of the beauty of the prince's sweet voice, Vanathi began to regain consciousness. Her eyes first opened slightly. When she saw the prince in front of her, her eyes widened; then her face also brightened. When she felt the small hand that appeared in her coral-colored mouth, her cheeks were sunken, she felt ashamed. She suddenly sat up. Billal looked back; he felt ashamed knowing that his younger brother was holding him, and in an instant, he remembered everything that had happened.

"Sister! Did I do this?" she said with tears in her eyes.

Before Kundavai could respond, the prince said, "Don't worry about that, Vanathi! It's true that mistakes happen to everyone. And there's a big reason why you're doing this; that's what I was telling my younger brother!"

Vanathi began to doubt whether what he was seeing was true, whether what he was hearing was true. The prince, who usually doesn't even glance at women, is talking to me? Is he comforting me with words of comfort? What can I say about my good fortune? Oh! My body is shivering! I feel like I'm going to faint again!...

The prince said, "Sister! The armies are waiting, I am on my way. When you send me a message, send it to tell me how this girl is doing. Take good care of this orphan girl!" and left.

All this was being watched and heard by the other female friends of Kudhavai Devi from the upper rooms through the windows. The fire of jealousy began to burn in their hearts. From that day on, Kundhavai began to show special love for Vanathi. He kept her with him without separating from her. He taught her the education and arts that he had learned. He even took her wherever he went without fail. Kundhavai Devi often took Vanathi to the palace and the Nandavanam and talked to her in private. She told her about the future greatness of her younger brother and all the secrets that she had discovered; Vanathi listened to all this with interest.

After the above incident, Vanathi lost consciousness four or five more times. Each time, Kundavaiprathi gave her appropriate treatment and brought her back to consciousness. When she regained consciousness, Vanathi would wake up crying and sobbing.

Chapter 15 Arulmozhivarmar

"What, Asade! Why are you crying like this?" Kuntavai would ask.

"I don't know, sister! Forgive me!" Vanathi said.

Kundavai would hug her and comfort her by kissing her. All this was making the other women more and more jealous. So, when Kundavai and Vanathi went to the house of the astrologer Kudanthai, it was only natural that the women would talk about all the above?
